Every summer, one of the Caribbean’s most impressive natural spectacles unfolds: hundreds of whale sharks gather off Cancún and Isla Mujeres to feed. Despite their size —they can exceed 12 meters— they’re gentle creatures that eat only plankton.

When is the season?

The season runs from May to September, peaking in July and August. Outside those months the activity doesn’t operate, so it’s worth planning your trip around those dates.

What is the experience like?

You head out to sea by boat (1 to 2 hours of navigation) until you find the sharks. You enter the water in small groups, with a vest and snorkel, always accompanied by a guide. You swim beside them for a few minutes per turn, keeping a respectful distance.

What to bring

Swimsuit, towel, biodegradable sunscreen (required to protect the ecosystem), a change of clothes and, if you get seasick, a tablet before departure. Most tours include snorkel gear, a vest, a light lunch and drinks.

Final tips

Book ahead: spots sell out in high season. Choose operators that respect viewing rules (a limited number of swimmers per shark). And get ready for one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
